Sac. G. Borsieri - Con Dio Art Nouveau 800 silver - 1908

Antique Italian Art Nouveau Prayer Book – 800 Silver Covers – Madonna and Child – Milan, circa 1908 An exquisite antique Italian Catholic prayer book, “Con Dio – Preghiere” (With God – Prayers), featuring beautifully embossed front and back covers in 800/1000 silver, decorated in the elegant Art Nouveau style, known in Italy as Stile Liberty. Dating from the early 20th century, this charming devotional book combines Italian silversmithing, religious iconography and beautifully illustrated antique printing. Silver Covers and Decoration The front silver cover features a finely detailed relief depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, surrounded by magnificent flowering lilies. The lilies, traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary, symbolise purity, innocence and devotion. The composition is framed by graceful floral ornaments, flowing stems and delicately sculpted foliage, characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. The reverse silver cover displays an elegant symmetrical arrangement of lilies and flowers, with flowing decorative borders and a beautifully balanced floral composition. Both covers are marked 800, indicating a silver fineness of 800/1000. The original black binding provides an attractive contrast to the richly decorated silver covers. The Original Prayer Book – Milan, 1908 The book contains the original Italian Catholic devotional text: “CON DIO – PREGHIERE” Compiled by Sac. G. Borsieri and published in Milan by E. Tenconi & C., Editori. An interesting historical detail is the original ecclesiastical approval: Imprimatur – Mediolani, 13 Martio 1908 Signed by Aloysius Maria Marelli (Luigi Maria Marelli), who became Bishop of Bobbio in 1908 and later Bishop of Bergamo. The Imprimatur confirms the official ecclesiastical approval of the religious text, dated 13 March 1908. The book was printed by F.lli Lanzani in Milan. The original pages feature beautifully printed religious illustrations, coloured floral borders, roses, sacred symbols and decorative typography, reflecting the artistic taste of the early 20th century. Dimensions and Weight Height: approximately 13 cm Width: approximately 7 cm Thickness: approximately 1.5 cm Total weight: approximately 150 grams, including the book and silver covers Silver fineness: 800/1000 Origin: Italy, Milan Period: Early 20th century, circa 1908 Style: Art Nouveau / Italian Liberty Condition Good antique condition considering its age of more than a century. The silver covers retain their beautiful decorative details, with some surface scratches and natural signs of age and handling. The original pages show age-related discolouration and wear. The inner binding has visible damage and separation along the spine, as illustrated in the photographs. The original character and historical charm of this devotional book have been preserved. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description. A Beautiful Collector's Piece An attractive example of early 20th-century Italian religious silverwork, combining the elegance of the Art Nouveau period with traditional Catholic craftsmanship.
