RUFUS OGUNDELE (Nigerian, 1946-1996) UNTITLED OIL PAINTING ON BOARD (1990) signed and dated lower right 64.5 x 55 cm Rufus Ogundele was born in Oshogbo, Nigeria, in 1946, and emerged from a cultural environment heavily influenced by Yoruba traditions. As a teenager, he joined his uncle Duro Ladipo's theater company, which played a crucial role in shaping his imagination and fostering his interest in mythological storytelling. In 1963, Ogundele participated in the pioneering Oshogbo workshops, where he embraced painting and printmaking, particularly learning linocut techniques under Georgina Beier. His art is deeply rooted in his devotion to Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron, creating a powerful fusion of spiritual fervor and dynamic movement. In 1983, Ogundele was invited to serve as artist-in-residence at Iwalewa-Haus, the renowned center for African arts and culture at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. His residency at Bayreuth bridged Yoruba mythical narrative traditions with European modernist scholarship, expanding the global reception of the Oshogbo School.
