Royal Navy. Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (1748-1810), friend and comrade of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson in several British victories of the Napoleonic Wars, and Nelson's successor in several commands, Collingwood's order for a court martial on Lieutenant Nesbitt &c for the loss of HMS Nautilus, dated 13th May 1807, 2pp of manuscript, foolscap, in a secretarial hand, though signed by Collingwood himself, the margin addressed to John Child Purvis (1747-1825), Rear Admiral of the White and Second Officer in the Command of His Majesty's Ships and Vessels, and signed on Vice-Admiral Collingwood's behalf by William Richard Cosway (1783-1834), his private secretary and almost certainly the author of the entire letter, docketed verso, loosely-inserted in a later folder HMS Nautilus (1804) left the Bay of Abydos, in the Hellespont, with urgent despatches for the Commander-in-Chief off Cadiz. On 5 January 1807 she struck an uncharted rock between Kithera and Andikythera. The survivors reached the barren rock where they took refuge, though there was no shelter from the weather. The one surviving boat was manned and eventually was able to reach Kithera and summon help. It took six days for help to arrive; 62 of the 122 men aboard died. Her second lieutenant gave the number of deaths as 58, consisting of some 18 men who drowned in the original wrecking, six men who died in attempts to leave the island, and 34 men who died of hunger and exposure. The ship's Captain Palmer died shortly before help arrived. The court-martial conducted at Cadiz found Captain Palmer's haste a proximate cause of the wreck, but had warm words for the actions of Nesbitt. The inquest found that 'Lieutenant Nesbitt and the officers and crew did use every exertion that circumstances should dictate.'
