Rosenthal – Advertising ashtray Reemtsma – Blue cobalt and gold porcelain – Germany – Art Deco – circa 1928 Elegant antique advertising ashtray made of porcelain by the famous German manufacturer Rosenthal, in Selb, Bavaria, for the tobacco house Reemtsma. Circular and generously curved, it features a white porcelain body topped with a wide cobalt blue frieze bearing the inscription REEMTSMA in large gold letters. The rim has several notches to hold cigarettes. In the center sits a circular cobalt-blue medallion, adorned with a stylized gold geometric motif. The overall look offers a decorative contrast between the white porcelain, the deep blue, and the gilding, perfectly characteristic of the advertising and decorative taste of the interwar period. On the base is the green Rosenthal – Selb-Bavaria mark, with crown and crossed elements. This type of mark belongs to Rosenthal’s old production period, used between 1907 and 1933. By its style and by comparison with similar Reemtsma promotional pieces, this ashtray can be dated to the late 1920s, probably around 1928. Founded in Germany at the end of the 19th century by Philipp Rosenthal, the Rosenthal manufactory quickly became one of Europe’s major references in artistic and decorative porcelain. Based notably in Selb, Bavaria, it collaborated over time with many artists, architects and designers and earned international reputation for the quality of its porcelains. The Reemtsma house is one of the great historic names in the German tobacco industry in the 20th century. Its development was particularly significant during the 1920s and 1930s, a period during which the company invested heavily in advertising, graphic arts and promotional items. Old advertising pieces bearing its name are today collected in the field of vintage advertising and tobacco collecting. Overall good condition given its age. The porcelain shows neither notable shine nor visible cracks in the photographs. However, there are traces of use and slight wear of the gilding, mainly on the most exposed parts of the rim, the frieze, and around some notches. These marks are consistent with the age and use of the item. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow precise assessment of the preservation state.
