Tutte le aste / Gioielli & Gemme / Roman to Byzantine Amethyst, Sapphire, & Gold Bead Necklace w/ Iolite Pendant

Mediterranean, Roman to Byzantine period. A strand of ancient amethyst beads, tumbled into soft barrels and ovoids, their violet bodies shifting from pale lilac to deep grape as light travels the strand. High-karat sheet gold spacers punctuate the sequence: ribbed melon beads, plain collars, and slender fluted tubes worked from thin foil in the manner of eastern Mediterranean ateliers. Two dark blue sapphire beads flank a teardrop pendant of iolite whose face carries a faintly incised cross, a devotional mark that likely places the assemblage in the later, Christian centuries of the range. The gold assays between 84.2 and 97.7 percent, consistent with ancient refining rather than modern alloying. Every element is ancient; the beads have been restrung on a modern cord with a hook closure so the necklace remains wearable. Amethyst carried a double reputation in the Roman world. Pliny records, and mocks, the belief that the stone prevented drunkenness, a pun folded into its Greek name (a-methystos, "not intoxicated"), and it was equally prized as the most regal of the quartzes, its color shadowing the imperial purple that law reserved for the highest ranks. Roman amethyst stock came largely through Egyptian workings and Indian trade. The blue stones point further east. Sapphire and iolite (a violet-blue cordierite) reached Mediterranean workshops along the Indian Ocean routes from Sri Lanka and southern India, arriving as rolled pebbles that were drilled and polished rather than faceted. Iolite is uncommon in ancient jewelry and easy to mistake by eye for sapphire or amethyst; carved here with a cross, it belongs to the transitional centuries in which older gem stock was recut and reset for Christian devotional wear. Gold assaying in the high 80s to high 90s percent is characteristic of antiquity, where residual silver and copper survive refining as trace impurities rather than being added deliberately, as in the modern 14k and 18k standards.
