Roman Empire

Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). Sestertius (Bronze, 38.5 mm, 23.5 g). Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVI. Laureate head right. Rev: IMP VI COS III S-C. Roma seated left on cuirass, holding spear and leaning on shield. Reference: RIC III 1037. Marcus Aurelius ruled during the height of the Roman Empire but faced repeated wars, plague and frontier pressure. Known as a Stoic philosopher, he wrote the *Meditations* while campaigning along the Danube. His reign combined intellectual distinction with prolonged military struggle, especially against Germanic tribes, and marked the beginning of a more troubled era after the relative stability of the earlier Antonine emperors.
