Introduced in 2000, it marked the arrival of Rolex’s first entirely in-house automatic chronograph movement for the model, bringing a significant technical evolution while preserving the unmistakable architecture that had defined the Daytona for decades. The present example is distinguished by its crisp white dial, a configuration that gives the watch a particularly clean and graphic character. Three chronograph registers are framed by metallic surrounds, creating subtle depth against the pale background, while the red “DAYTONA” signature above the subsidiary seconds provides the only vivid accent. Applied luminous hour markers and polished hands complete a dial that remains remarkably legible despite the complexity of the chronograph display. Its stainless steel case is paired with the engraved steel tachymeter bezel characteristic of the pre-Cerachrom generation. Together with the screw-down chronograph pushers, Triplock crown and substantial Oyster bracelet, these elements give the 116520 the purposeful, mechanical appearance associated with the classic steel Daytona. The alternating brushed and polished surfaces of the bracelet and case add refinement without diminishing its sporting character. The calibre 4130 represented a major technical step for Rolex. Developed specifically for the Daytona, the self-winding chronograph movement uses a column wheel and vertical clutch, while its simplified architecture reduced the number of components compared with the preceding generation and allowed for a longer power reserve. It would become one of the defining Rolex chronograph movements of the modern era. Dating from circa 2010, this example captures the 116520 at a compelling point in Daytona history: unmistakably modern in construction, yet retaining the engraved metal bezel and restrained aesthetic of the generations that preceded the ceramic-bezel models.
