ROCHELANDET (Brigitte). — Brothels of Yesteryear. - Lot 258

ROCHELANDET (Brigitte). — Brothels of Yesteryear. Geneva, Minerva, 1999. Quarto, publisher’s illustrated hardcover, 143 pp., numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions, postcards, drawings, and historical documents, both within the text and as full-page illustrations. ISBN 2-8307-0543-2. New edition, in an illustrated hardcover, of the work originally published by Horvath in 1995 as part of the “Autrefois” series. The 1999 Minerva edition has 143 pages and bears the ISBN visible on your copy. A thoroughly documented historical study of French brothels during the Belle Époque and the early 20th century. Brigitte Rochelandet draws in particular on the archives of the vice squad and a wealth of visual material to reconstruct the organization and daily life of these establishments: prostitution regulations, brothel owners and pimps, recruitment, clientele, the living conditions of sex workers, the risks of the trade, and leaving the profession. The illustrations are one of the book’s main attractions: old photographs, views of brothels, postcards, and satirical or police-related documents. Of particular note is a reproduction of “La Rafle,” a song illustrated by Steinlen and published in *Gil Blas* in 1893, as well as a historical view of Rue Sachot in Besançon, which was then known for its many brothels. Interior in good condition, appears clean. Hardcover intact but shows scuffing, small scratches, and signs of wear, with more noticeable wear on the caps and corners; back cover slightly soiled and scuffed. No apparent missing pages.
