In this auction we present an absolute icon of international design: the Roche Bobois Mah Jong modular sofa, a timeless symbol of freedom, color, and maximum flexibility of interior design, here enriched by the distinctive chromatic taste of Missoni Home fabrics. Design and History In 1971 the meeting between Roche Bobois and designer Hans Hopfer marked a real revolution in the world of furniture. The sofa conceived by Hopfer for a “earth-to-life” experience became the famous Mah Jong, an iconic, hedonistic, and brazenly modern model. Its fully modular structure, inspired by the tiles of the famous Oriental game, allows infinite combinations and reconfigurations, offering unprecedented freedom in managing living space. Lot Composition and Conditions The auction lot presented is a particularly rich and scenographic modular composition, made up of 11 elements in total: 8 seating cushions and 3 backs (including 1 fixed corner and 2 straight reclining backs). Upholstery materials: A precious blend of Roche Bobois-era fabrics including wide-ribbed velvet (corduroy), jacquard, and cotton/striped and brushed fabric. Padding material: High-density foam hand-tufted, ensuring firmness, softness, and maximum comfort. Color/Pattern: Spectacular multicolor combination in Bordeaux, Plum, Fuchsia Pink, Yellow, Light Blue/Green and Striped Missoni Home style. Modularity and Versatility: Being a totally modular system, the 8 cushions and 3 backs allow infinite configurations: from a single large corner or grid sofa to expansive islands/beds, up to single armchairs and independent poufs arranged in the space. General Conditions and Hygiene: The sofa is in good vintage condition (date around late '90s / early 2000s) and has recently undergone professional washing and sanitization. Condition of the upholsteries and notes: The fabrics are solid and free of cuts or tears. Note the presence of a few residual stains which, to preserve the delicacy of the original fabrics, have not been treated with aggressive chemicals; therefore it cannot be guaranteed whether they will come out with specific treatments (please refer carefully to the photos dedicated to the imperfections, which are part of the description). Authenticity: Authenticity is guaranteed by the original Roche Bobois label and by the “Made in Italy” tags on the backs (see photos).
