A special mixed-media collage by Robert Rauschenberg from 1973, in which the American artist combines screen printing, photographic image elements, and everyday materials into a multi-layered composition. About the work: The piece consists of colored screen prints and a mounted brown paper bag with a green stamp, arranged on handmade paper. Through the combination of printed images, abstract color fields, and a real everyday object, a characteristic link between art and everyday life emerges. Rauschenberg's particular strength lies in his ability to fuse seemingly opposing materials and image worlds into a new whole. Photographic fragments, intense color, print techniques, and the raw material of the paper bag overlap and complement one another. In doing so, Rauschenberg also uses the technical process of reproduction and silkscreen printing to create unexpected image effects and new connections. The combination of collage, silkscreen, found object, and mixed media is exemplary of Rauschenberg's experimental visual language and his position between Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art. About the artist: Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) is one of the most influential American artists of the postwar period. As early as the 1950s, he began to dissolve the traditional boundaries between painting and sculpture. He became famous especially for his so-called Combines, in which he combined painting with photographs, newspaper clippings, and found everyday objects. Later, he transferred this principle to his prints and developed innovative works with silkscreen, lithography, photography, and collage. Rauschenberg's art played a decisive role in paving the way for Neo-Dada and Pop Art. Rather than drawing a distinction between high art and everyday visual culture, he made their interaction the starting point of his art. In 1964 he received the International Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale, thereby consolidating his central position in postwar American art on an international level.
