Rino Fioretti (Florence 1919 - 1998) - Via San Leonardo in Florence. Interesting oil on cardboard painting by the Florentine painter Rino Fioretti (born 1919), depicting a suggestive view of Via San Leonardo, one of the ancient hillside streets of Florence. The work presents a composition of great balance, in which the winding road, bounded by tall plastered walls, guides the gaze toward lush vegetation. The warm tones of the trees, the deep greens, and the brightness of the wall surfaces convey the quiet, intimate atmosphere of this characteristic Florentine corner. Rino Fioretti was a pupil of Ottone Rosai, a fundamental figure in 20th-century Tuscan painting, from whom he absorbed a particular sensitivity in representing landscape and urban architecture. As in Rosai’s lesson, even in Fioretti’s painting streets, walls and buildings become protagonists of the composition, through a simplification of forms and a particular attention to the relationships between volumes, light and color. In this painting this stylistic closeness is particularly evident: the absence of human figures, the essential geometry of the architectures, and the suspended atmosphere confer on the view an intimate and contemplative character, reminiscent of the best Florentine landscape tradition of the twentieth century. The painting nevertheless preserves its own chromatic sensibility, evident in the softness of the brushstrokes and the delicate tonal transitions of the vegetation. Dimensions of the painting alone: 70 x 50 cm. The painting is sold with the original vintage frame (102 x 80 cm), which should be regarded as a courtesy from the seller. The work is hand-signed at the bottom left (see photo). Very good state of conservation. Tracked national and international shipping with express courier. Rino Fioretti is a Florentine painter born in 1919. His artistic output stands out for a rational landscape style that references the Tuscan painting tradition represented by his master Ottone Rosai. Fioretti’s artistic language belongs to that Tuscan landscape painting current that stems from Ottone Rosai and can be seen, from a formal point of view, in the phase of the “Return to Order.” After the experimentation of the historic avant-gardes, there was a reaction with a return to traditional painting values. Also in Rino Fioretti, as in Ottone Rosai, the “return to order” mainly signifies an exaltation of volumes and masses. Therefore the landscape becomes essential, devoid of particularisms, in a composition focused on creating a play of geometric form balances. Because the reference of this interpretation of the landscape is also Florentine quattrocento, and we can understand this from the harmony of colors, from the subdued chromaticism that characterizes the entire surface of the work. The exaltation of plastic and chromatic values transforms the landscape into a frozen atmosphere, where forms have a rational geometric connotation. It is an aesthetics that possesses striking accents, yet remains within the realm of phenomenal reality and, for this reason, can be likened to the painting movement defined as Magical Realism. Most of Rino Fioretti’s oeuvre is dedicated to the theme of the Tuscan landscape. The protagonists of his works are the countryside with its villages and small-housed towns. In Fioretti’s paintings there is a great chromatic harmony; the landscape is depicted in a frozen atmosphere, where trees and rows seem almost reproduced in series, in a representation of balances of geometric volumes.
