Remarkable female Pwo / Mwana Pwo mask – Chokwe – Angola / DRC – carved wood

Remarkable female mask Pwo / Mwana Pwo attributed to the Chokwe artistic tradition, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo. This work possesses a particularly strong presence. Carved in a dense wood with a deep dark brown tone, the face exhibits the solemn elegance and the remarkable plastic construction characteristic of Pwo female representations: a broad domed forehead, strongly drawn arches, eyes stretched into narrow horizontal slits, a long nose delicately projected, a slightly open mouth revealing carved dentition, and a tightened chin. The face is animated by a very beautiful set of geometric motifs and scarifications. Under the eyes appear vertical grid-like compositions, while the cheeks bear several linear and lozenge marks. On the forehead, a substantial cross-cut geometric motif immediately constitutes one of the sculpture’s focal points. Comparable motifs are documented on historic Pwo female masks and are associated with beauty, identity, and the status of women in Chokwe culture. One of the most seductive elements of this example is its hairstyle in vegetal fibers, still largely preserved. A thick braid surrounds the posterior part of the head and extends into multiple cords, knots, and twisted strands. This organic, irregular, and highly graphic assembly gives the mask remarkable sculptural depth and provides a spectacular counterpoint to the mask’s dark, polished surface. The upper part of the head is entirely carved with deep parallel grooves simulating or extending the hairstyle. The contrast between these regular incisions, the braided fibers, and the softly modeled surface of the face creates a work particularly interesting from every angle. The surface shows a nuanced brown-black patina, with numerous tonal variations, abrasions, small marks, and superficial traces visible in the photographs. These particularities strongly contribute to the character of the object and have deliberately not been concealed. The back allows observation of the mask’s construction, its interior hollowing, several perforations and attachment points, as well as the fibers fixed around the rim. For a collector, this interior view is especially interesting as it allows appreciation of the fabrication technique and the object’s real condition. In Chokwe tradition, Pwo masks represent a female figure and may evoke a founding ancestor or an ideal of femininity. The Mwana Pwo mask is a form associated with the young woman and feminine beauty. These masks were traditionally danced by men during masquerades, particularly in the context of initiations. An extremely expressive piece, whose combination of dark wood, scarifications, hairstyle in vegetal fibers, and the power of the modeling gives it an almost architectural presence. The mask immediately acquires a museum-quality aura and constitutes a very fine object of collection for a contemporary interior as well as for a collection dedicated to Central African arts.
