RÉGNIER DE LA PLANCHE (Louis). History of the State of France, Both of the Republic and of Religion. During the Reign of Francis II. No place, no publisher, 1576. Substantial in-8 volume, fawn calfskin, border decorated with a repeated palette motif enclosed by two double fillets, coat of arms in the center, foliage and small ironwork motifs (haloed bird, flower, acorn, ermine spots), traces of ribbons, smooth spine richly decorated in the same style with an empty oval medallion in the center, gilt edges (Late 16th-century binding). First edition of this work by a staunch supporter of the Reformation (Brunet, III, 189–190), attributed to Régnier de La Planche, one of the closest advisors to the Constable of Montmorency. Beautiful binding bearing the coat of arms of the Abbot of Chauvirey (Burgundy) (azure, a gold band flanked by 7 bars, 4 in the chief placed 1 and 3, and 3 in the base). Engraved coat-of-arms bookplate of Charles de Bachi, Marquis d’Aubais. Coated-arms seal on a flyleaf bearing the initials Rd vW (Reinhard von Wattenwyl or Watteville?). From the Radoulesco Library (bookplate). Pencil underlines at the end of the volume. Holes or wormholes (sometimes repaired) in the margins of quires A through Q, often affecting the running title. Slight water stain in the upper corner of the last 9 quires. Restored hinges and end caps.
