Reclining Female Nude ('La Negresse Couché') Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

A very fine impression of the fifth state (of six), printing darkly, with good contrasts and touches of burr in places. Trimmed on the platemark, just within at the upper margin. Rembrandt devoted most of his later etchings to the theme of the female nude. They represent a highlight of his late work. His Nude Lying Down has been described by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as ‘one of Rembrandt's most beautiful and understated works.‘ Made late in his career, the print reflects the extraordinary freedom and subtlety he had by then achieved in printmaking. – Laid down overall on fine Japanese paper, apparently at an early date.
