RARE lot of 10 Herkimer Diamonds — 4.85 carats...

Exceptional lot of 10 natural Herkimer Diamonds, bringing together a particularly fascinating selection of miniature crystals about 4 to 6 mm in size. Despite their very small dimensions, these specimens display an astonishing crystallographic richness: natural terminations, bright faces, complex geometries, remarkable transparency and internal architectures that differ deeply from one individual to another. Some crystals are especially clear, while others harbor spectacular veils, natural fractures, inclusions and growth figures that multiply light reflections. The whole offers especially remarkable morphological diversity: stout, elongated crystals, highly geometric or with more complex constructions, each individual a true unique miniature piece. With a total weight of 4.85 carats, the average weight is about 0.485 carat per specimen, underscoring the extraordinary finesse of these small natural architectures. These are extremely rare biterminated quartz specimens, sought under the name “Herkimer Diamonds” for their brilliance, transparency and naturally spectacular morphology. Characteristics - Collection name: Herkimer Diamonds - Number of specimens: 10 - Mineralogy: Natural biterminated quartz - Origin: Pakistan - Total weight: 4.85 carats - Average weight: ≈ 0.485 carat per specimen - Dimensions: Approximately 4 to 6 mm - Morphology: Natural biterminated crystals with varied architectures - Color: Colorless, with occasional natural tints - Transparency: Transparent to locally translucent - Luster: Intense vitreous - Crystallization: Natural - Terminations: Natural, with varying developments depending on the specimen - Internal structure: Veils, inclusions, natural fractures and growth figures - Condition: Natural specimens, uncut - Interest: Collecting mineralogy, crystallography, loupe observation and macrophotography A true collection of ten natural architectures The standout feature of this lot lies in the extraordinary diversity of the ten specimens gathered. At first glance, all belong to the same aesthetic family. Yet closer observation quickly reveals that none is identical to its neighbor. Some develop very pronounced terminations and an almost perfectly geometric silhouette. Others have a more irregular construction, marked by crystalline associations or a much denser internal architecture. Several also feature wide transparent windows allowing direct observation of their heart. This diversity makes the lot a true miniature comparative collection, allowing appreciation of several different expressions of natural crystallization in only a few millimeters. Remarkable complexity at only 4–6 mm This is probably one of the most fascinating aspects of this set. Each crystal measures only about 4 to 6 mm, and yet some contain an impressive amount of detail. The large transparent faces act as tiny windows. Through them appear successive planes, reflective natural fractures, veils, inclusions and various growth structures. When the crystal is moved under light, these elements appear and disappear in turn, giving a real sense of depth. Under magnification, these specimens take on a completely different dimension: a few millimeters of material become an extraordinarily complex mineral landscape. A geometry not shaped by man The almost cut-looking appearance of some specimens is particularly spectacular. Their faces, edges and terminations correspond to their natural crystalline architecture. This geometry explains largely the historical fascination Herkimer Diamonds have exerted on collectors. Some large faces can brutally reflect light and produce an almost metallic shine, before becoming transparent again as the viewing angle changes. This succession of transparency and reflection gives the crystals a highly living appearance. Ten unique witnesses of a long growth history The structures visible inside these specimens also bear witness to their formation. Crystal growth is a progressive process. Environmental conditions can evolve, be interrupted and then resume, while different events can leave permanent traces in its structure. Veils, inclusions, natural fractures and growth planes then become as many signatures of this history. This is why two natural crystals never display exactly the same internal architecture. In this lot, this individuality is particularly interesting since ten specimens can be observed and compared simultaneously. the History of the “Herkimer Diamonds” The name “Herkimer Diamond” historically originates from the famous biterminated crystals discovered in Herkimer County and its surroundings, in New York State. Their vitreous luster, transparency and above all their particularly well-developed natural terminations earned them this comparison with diamonds. They have gradually become emblematic specimens in the world of collectible mineralogy. Comparable biterminated crystallizations are known in different regions of the world. It is therefore important to distinguish the historical label used to describe this type of specimen from its geographic origin, which is clearly indicated in the lot’s characteristics. A selection particularly suited to observation under magnification These miniature dimensions make the lot particularly interesting under a loupe, microscope or macro objective. Details that are hard to perceive with the naked eye become spectacular: small secondary faces, terminations, layerings of planes, micro-inclusions and internal architectures appear progressively. The presence of 10 different individuals also allows comparing their transparency, proportions and level of complexity. Each crystal can thus be studied individually before being placed back into the whole. Only 0.485 carat on average per specimen With a total weight of 4.85 carats for 10 crystals, each represents on average only 0.485 carat. This ratio between their very small mass and their level of detail is precisely one of the remarkable aspects of this selection. In less than half a carat on average lie complete crystal faces, natural terminations and sometimes an extremely complex internal structure network. A remarkable set for the collector This lot finally brings together ten unique natural pieces, sufficiently homogeneous to form a coherent collection while being sufficiently different for each to deserve individual observation. Their small size, their brilliance, their transparency, their natural terminations and above all the variety of their architectures make this set an especially interesting selection for the collector of miniature crystals. 10 natural specimens – 4.85 carats total – about 0.485 carat per crystal – only 4 to 6 mm: ten unique mineral architectures concentrated in an exceptional miniature collection.
