Published Caddo Hickory Engraved Pottery Bottle - Crenshaw Site, Arkansas

Native American, Caddo. A long-necked earthenware bottle rising from a full, globular body to a tall cylindrical neck, its burnished surface flaring across warm ochre and smoky gray fire-clouds left by the pit-firing. Encircling the shoulder are the fine incised concentric lines that define the Hickory Engraved type, a spare register of parallel bands that lets the vessel's swelling form carry the composition. The potter built the body by hand-coiling, then smoothed and polished it to a soft sheen before firing. Bottles of this graceful proportion held liquids and accompanied the dead in Caddo mortuary practice, prestige containers whose refinement signaled the status of the interred. The controlled silhouette and disciplined engraving distinguish the work of Caddoan communities of the Red River valley, master ceramicists of the southeastern woodlands. Hickory Engraved is a well-defined Caddo ceramic type of the Red River basin, characterized by fine engraved lines, often horizontal bands on the neck or shoulder, executed on well-polished bottles and carinated bowls. The Crenshaw Site (3MI6) in Miller County, southwestern Arkansas, is among the most significant Caddo ceremonial centers, a mound complex on the Red River occupied through the Formative and Early Caddo periods and known for its elaborate mortuary deposits. Vessels recovered there entered collections through mid-twentieth-century excavation and surface collection. The dark fire-clouding across the body is a natural product of open pit-firing, prized by collectors as evidence of authentic manufacture. Item # 202250
