Portrait of a young gentleman, Dutch or Italian master of the 17th century

Descriptio Oil on copper. Measures 29 x 21 cm. Half-length portrait of a young gentleman elegantly dressed in dark, understated clothing, set against an architectural background with a classical column and a flowing red drapery that emphasizes his social standing. The figure adopts a confident and distinguished posture, with one hand resting on his torso and the other in a gesture of poised authority, while his direct gaze establishes a direct connection with the viewer. The wide white cuffs create a striking contrast of light against the black attire, adding visual dynamism and compositional sophistication. The execution reveals a delicate modeling of the flesh tones, subtle tonal gradations, and meticulous attention to detail in the face and clothing. The composition reflects the representational models developed by the Neapolitan School during the first half of the 18th century, where courtly elegance and late Baroque taste are combined with remarkable formal restraint. The technical quality of the copper support contributes to the precision of the drawing and the richness of the chromatic nuances, giving the work a distinguished presence and remarkable psychological power. Dimensions: 29 x 21 cm. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist.
