POINTILLIST PAINTING "THE WHITE SKIRT" by Eugène BEGARAT (born in 1943) Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Titled on the stretcher and signed on the back. Dimensions: 65 x 53.5 cm Good condition Eugène Begarat is a painter born in Nice in 1943. At the age of seventeen, he enrolled at the School of Decorative Arts in his hometown, then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1964. Passionate about color and light, Eugène Begarat is part of the major classical trend in contemporary art. He draws inspiration from the technical advances of the Post-Impressionists to develop a personal style that renews and modernizes Pointillism and Chromatic Divisionism. Early in his career, he moved to Brittany to immerse himself in the light that inspired Félix Vallotton and the Nabis. He then set out in search of stronger color contrasts and traveled throughout southern Europe and the Mediterranean region of Africa (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia). His style solidified and refined itself through his exposure to the vibrant light of the South. He returned to settle in France, first in Paris and then in Provence, near Vence, where he built an open-air studio-garden in which he posed his models adorned in brilliant fabrics. In this way, he developed a body of work in which, little by little, the horizon fades away, giving way to frames of foliage and natural elements sculpted by light. He thus created endless variations on the theme of women and their attire, where the radiance of a complexion and the sheen of hair are accentuated by the colorful satins and shimmering silks he loved to use. Over time, his brushwork moved away from relying solely on Divisionism to increasingly incorporate swaths of color, though light never ceased to be the cornerstone of his art. Eugène Barat never concerned himself with the controversies and trends that characterize contemporary art. He remained indifferent to the critical condemnations that so unsettled the figurative artists of the 20th century. He has built a solid and coherent body of work centered on light and color, sculpting, painting after painting, his vision of a sublimated femininity that is both eternal and subtly contemporary. His works are featured in major international collections.
