PIRANESE (Giovanni Battista). Prisons. - Lot 243

PIRANESE (Giovanni Battista). Prisons. Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Image, [n.d.]. Large square quarto, paperback, illustrated cover. ISBN 2-914239-64-5. An album dedicated to the famous *Carceri d’invenzione*—Imaginary Prisons—by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), one of the most fascinating series in the history of European engraving. Numerous full-page reproductions of the plates in the series, allowing readers to appreciate the monumental scale of the imaginary architecture, the staircases, walkways, vaults, and mechanical devices that make up this visionary universe. Several states of the engravings are reproduced, notably the changes made by Piranesi when he revisited the series. A beautiful documentary volume dedicated to one of the pinnacles of Piranesi’s engraved work. Some soiling and scuffing on the cover; corners slightly marked; interior in good condition.
