Pierre PUVIS de CHAVANNES (1824–1898, Symbolist painter) / Signed autograph letter, 1 page in-8 plus address page with postage (postcard), Paris, August 26, 1896, to Jérôme DOUCET (1865–1957): "The proof you sent me is as good as it can be, and since your intention is to include this portrait in your publication, I will not hesitate to use it as is —Besides, it would be impossible for me to make the retouches you’re asking for; I wouldn’t have the time, and I repeat, they seem unnecessary to me” [This refers to the illustration created by Puvis de Chavannes for a personal publication by Jérôme Doucet, *La Chanson des Larmes*, which appeared in the *Revue Illustrée* in late 1896]
