PHENOMENAL CARVED CAROUSEL LION ATTRIBUTED TO DENTZEL CAROUSEL COMPANY Circa 1890–1910, attributed to the Dentzel Carousel Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, monumental carved and painted wood menagerie carousel lion modeled in a striding pose with head dramatically raised and mouth open, featuring inset glass eyes, carved teeth and tongue, and an exceptionally deep, flowing mane carved in high relief. The lion is fitted with an elaborate carved saddle and polychrome-decorated trappings incorporating scrollwork and a sculptural lion-mask terminal with inset glass eyes and pendant tassel, together with leather tack and metal stirrup.
