1930s, English, cedar and ebony, the panelled double doors opening to reveal a long open section, with a brass rail and six hooks on the left, adjacent to a four-shelved section on the right, over a large open section, raised on carved graduated ebonised supports, 117cm wide, 63.5cm deep, 187cm high, Arthur Mitchell (1873-1965), Glenfall House, Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire. In 1920 Glenfall House, Charlton Kings was purchased by Arthur Mitchell. The house, which Mitchell enlarged, had been rebuilt in 1808 for the then owner Charles Higgs. Mitchell employed Sidney Barnsley, Norman Jewson, and Peter Waals to extend and furnish the house, and to create the terraced gardens to the west of the house, with the orchard beyond. The house remained in Mitchell's ownership until 1965, after which much of the Arts & Crafts furniture that he had commissioned was sold. The auction was held by Young and Gilling of Cheltenham, 24-25 November, 1965. Furniture has subsequently been sold by descendents. Condition Report, Condition Report, Overall, the wardrobe is in mostly good order. There is some slight misalignment to the doors intrinsic to the nature of manufacture. Light knocks and chips, scratches and scuffs to the wood throughout commensurate with age and use. Some wear and rubbing to the ebonised sections. Possible light warping to the top of the piece.
