He is regarded as one of the most important artists of the so-called Skagen Art Circle, a group of artists who gathered in the late 19th century in northern Denmark to paint the distinctive light and life along the coast. Krøyer was born in Stavanger and grew up in Copenhagen. He showed great talent for painting early on and studied at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts. Later he traveled through many European countries, especially to Paris, where he was influenced by modern currents in painting. He became famous mainly for his sunlit beach and social scenes from Skagen. His paintings often depict fellow artists, walks on the beach, or outdoor dinners. He is especially known for his depictions of the so-called “blue hour light” along the Skagen coast. Today his works are among the most important examples of Nordic painting from the late 19th century and can be seen in many museums in Denmark and internationally.
