Exhibited: Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster, 'Peter Phillips', November - December 1972, no. 66. Literature: Enrico Crispolti, 'Peter Phillips: Works 1960-74', Milan, 1977, n.p., no. 99, illustrated. Peter Phillips was an important figure in the development of British Pop Art. Born in Birmingham, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London from 1959 to 1962, where he was part of a group of artists that included David Hockney, Allen Jones and R B Kitaj. Phillips was particularly interested in the visual culture of everyday life, including advertising, cars, comics, packaging, machinery and commercial design. His paintings are often characterised by a clean, mechanical appearance, using sharp outlines, repeated images and strong contrasts. These elements create a sense of movement and rhythm within his compositions. During the 1960s, Phillips spent time in New York, where he encountered the developing American Pop Art movement. Artists including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein influenced his work, although Phillips developed a distinctive style of his own. He combined recognisable popular imagery with an interest in structure, pattern and abstraction. By bringing together elements of fine art and commercial graphics, his work explored the ways in which familiar images can attract attention and influence the viewer. Phillips continued to develop these ideas throughout his career, working in painting, collage and mixed media. His work has received international recognition and is held in major public collections, including the Tate, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
