GUIDO SCALA / LUCIANO BOTTARO – PÉPITO Origin: purchased at the specialized auction house Septimus. Two original Chinese ink panels – “La Cacahuète” (1957) & “La Belle au bras dormant” (1962), one of which with original color tracing. Beautiful pair of two original panels from the famous French series Pépito, created by the Italian master cartoonist Luciano Bottaro (1931–2006) and produced within the circle of artists around Bottaro, including Guido Scala. Pépito is one of Bottaro’s best-known humorous creations. The young corsair Pépito experiences his adventures in the fictional Caribbean region and regularly faces his great opponent, the governor Hernandez de la Banane. Among the well-known characters are Crochette, Bec-de-Fer, Ventempoupe and La Merluche. The French series was published by Sagédition and enjoyed great success from 1954 onward. Due to the enormous amount of work for the French market, Bottaro was assisted by several comic artists. The official Bottaro site names, among others, Guido Scala, Giorgio Rebuffi, Raymond Maric, Ferdinando Fusco, Luciano Capitanio and Giorgio Cavazzano as collaborators on the Pépito production. Bottaro himself maintained artistic supervision. Luciano Bottaro also stated that from the early 1950s there was effectively a “Studio Bottaro” in which he initially collaborated with Guido Scala and Franco Aloisi. 1. Pépito no. 56 – “La Cacahuète prisonnière – suite et fin” Original page in Chinese ink Dimensions: 36.5 × 25.5 cm Numbering: 56/8 Year: 1957 This beautiful original page belongs to the story La Cacahuète prisonnière – suite et fin, published as Pépito no. 56 in 1957. The French bibliography lists no. 55 as the first part of La Cacahuète prisonnière and no. 56 as the continuation and conclusion, both from 1957. The page features several emblematic characters from the Pépito universe and is executed in the dynamic, humorous artwork that is so characteristic of the Bottaro school. The numbering 56/8 is a particularly interesting production detail and fits the original French production for Sagédition. Attribution: production circle/atelier of Luciano Bottaro, with stylistic attribution to Guido Scala. In the absence of a signature or written expertise, this attribution should be considered an attribution and not an absolute documentary certainty. 2. Pépito no. 185 – “La Belle au bras dormant – 2e partie” Original page in Chinese ink Dimensions: 29 × 20 cm Page: 14 Year: ca. 1962 This original page also comes with the accompanying original tracing sheet with color indications, also about 29 × 20 cm. On the back of the tracing sheet it clearly states: “Pépito n° 185 – Planche 14” This forms very strong documentation of the original production. The plate belongs to: Pépito n° 185 – La Belle au bras dormant – 2e partie circa 1962. A particularly interesting confirmation comes from a French auction catalog of September 2025. There was offered an original Luciano Bottaro – Pépito no. 185, “La Belle au bras dormant”, 2e partie, planche 14, Chinese ink with accompanying color tracing sheet. The listed dimensions were 28 × 20 and were identical to the offered specimen. The combination of original page + original color tracing + clear mention “Pépito n°185 – Planche 14” makes this a particularly attractive piece for the collector of original European comic art. Guido Scala Guido Scala (1936–2001) was an important Italian humorous comic artist and one of the artists from Bottaro’s circle. He belonged to the so-called École de Rapallo, the group of artists who emerged around Bottaro in the 1950s. The official Bottaro site explicitly names Guido Scala as one of the contributors to Pépito. In particular, the large amount of Pépito material produced for the French market made collaboration necessary. According to the official Bottaro site thousands of pages were produced for the French market and Bottaro worked with several artists, always under his artistic supervision. Appraisal Estimated value for this pair of two original Pépito pages: I would currently use a indicative market value of: €1,500 – €2,500 for the lot Indicative breakdown: Pépito no. 56 – “La Cacahuète prisonnière – suite et fin” (1957), page 56/8: €600 – €1,000 Pépito no. 185 – “La Belle au bras dormant – 2e partie” (ca. 1962), page 14 + original color tracing: €800 – €1,400 The second page, in my opinion, is the strongest part of the ensemble, mainly due to the very clear production documentation.
