PELLERI: A PARMA POET OF THE PERIOD BETWEEN NEOCOLONIAL? NEOCALC? Wait adjust: The original is Italian. Let's translate properly. PELLERI: A PARMA POET BETWEEN NEOClassicism AND 19th-Century LITERARY CULTURE ABSTRACT Elegant Parmense edition of 1827 of the Selected Poems by Giuseppe Pelleri Parmigiano, published at Rossi-Ubaldi, with engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece. The collection gathers sonnets, songs, tercets, odes, and occasional pieces that attest to the poetic production of an author tied to the Parma cultural environment between the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. The copy preserves the rare original editorial binding in printed cardboard, with a typographic border on the boards, a feature of literary editions destined for the educated public of the time. Particularly interesting is the preservation of the original bindings, an index of a copy never trimmed during binding. FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Selected Poems. Parma, at Rossi-Ubaldi, 1827. Giuseppe Pelleri. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE Giuseppe Pelleri belongs to the tradition of Parma’s literati active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a period when Parma stood as one of northern Italy’s major cultural centers. The collection reflects the poetic taste of the era: alongside the Arcadian tradition survive neoclassical elements, celebratory pieces, religious poems, verses devoted to family affections, and moral reflections. Particularly significant is the reference, present in the volume, to the Parma court and to the figure of Maria Ludovica (Maria Luigia) of Austria, duchess of Parma from 1814 to 1847. The poem dedicated to the arrival of Her Majesty Maria Luigia testifies to the relationship between occasional literature and the duchy’s public life. The Rossi-Ubaldi edition also represents an interesting example of Parma’s early nineteenth-century book production: volumes intended for the educated public, often circulated in academic and aristocratic circles, with attention to typographic quality and editorial presentation. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Giuseppe Pelleri, a Parmigian poet, was an active writer in the local literary scene between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His output comprises mainly lyrical, encomiastic, and religious verses, following poetic models still widespread in Italian neoclassical culture. The 1827 edition represents one of the main testimonies of his literary activity, offering an overview of his most significant works. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The edition was published in Parma in 1827 at Rossi-Ubaldi, a typography active in Parma’s nineteenth-century book production. The presence of the original editorial binding indicates a commercially packaged distribution by the printer, a practice increasingly common in the nineteenth century compared to the traditional sale in loose sheets. Copies kept with the original cover and borders are less frequent than later rebound copies.
