PATRICK OLODOODI TJUNGURRAYI, Tingari, 2004

PATRICK OLODOODI TJUNGURRAYI Pintupi language, c.1935 - 2017 Tingari, 2004 acrylic on linen 183.5 x 61 cm bears inscription verso: Patrick Tjungurrayi, Papunya Tula Artists, 183x61cm, PT0404111 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Northern Territory, Cat No. PT0404111 The Collection of Barbara Hansen, Victoria Accompanied by an original receipt and certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists Patrick Tjungurrayi was a senior Pintupi artist and an important figure within the Papunya Tula Artists movement. Born around 1935 in the Western Desert, Tjungurrayi grew up living a traditional desert life before moving with his family through a number of settlements. His paintings are intimately connected to his Country and the ancestral narratives for which he held cultural knowledge and responsibility. This painting depicts designs associated with Yamatju, a rockhole and soakage water site situated slightly west of Jupiter Well in Western Australia. The work relates to the travels of the Tingari ancestors, who journeyed across vast areas of the Western Desert, connecting important places and establishing cultural knowledge and practices. At Yamatju, a large group of Tingari men are understood to have camped before continuing east and then northeast towards Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). The Tingari narratives encompass extensive song cycles linking people and places across Country. Much of the knowledge associated with these journeys is culturally restricted and is not appropriate to reproduce publicly. Accordingly, the artist provided no further details concerning the particular events associated with Yamatju. Through his carefully structured fields of repeated lines and forms, Tjungurrayi evokes the landscape and the ancestral journeys embedded within it. The painting conveys what can be shared publicly while the deeper cultural knowledge associated with Yamatju and the Tingari remains held within its appropriate cultural context. © PATRICK TJUNGURRAYI / Copyright Agency, 2026
