PATENT PENDING NO. 1 - Black & Decker - Valve Tester - 1950

A Black & Decker valve seal tester (often referred to as a valve tester or vacuum valve tester) from the 1950s is an iconic tool in automotive history. In that era, Black & Decker, alongside hand tools, was a market leader in specialized inspection equipment for repair shops, including their well-known Vibro-Centric valve seating lappers and Valvemaster machines. [1, 2, 3] Operation and purpose The tester was used after grinding or lapping the engine valves to check whether the valve seated perfectly airtight against the valve seat in the cylinder head. The principle: The device works on vacuum or air pressure. A rubber cup or adapter is placed over the valve port (inlet or exhaust). The measurement: By manually pumping vacuum or using compressed air, the mechanic could see on an analog gauge (pressure gauge) whether the pressure remained steady. [1] The result: If the needle on the gauge returned, it meant that air was leaking between the valve and the seat. The valve then had to be ground more finely with grinding paste. [1, 2] Features of a 1950s specimen Casing: Made of sturdy heavy cast iron or thick aluminum, often finished in the classic ripple/ crackle paint or hammerite in gray/black or vintage B&D green. [1] Meter: A large, clearly readable glass analog meter with a chrome rim. [1] Branding: Equipped with the old, characteristic Black & Decker logo (often a hexagonal or oval metal nameplate). [1] Current value for vintage enthusiasts Today these testers are sought-after collectibles (memorabilia) for the workshop or man cave, but they are still functionally used by classic car restorers due to their rugged mechanical quality.
