Parboni, Cuccioni - Vedute Antiche e Moderne della città di Roma - 1800

ROMA INCISA: 84 VIEWS OF THE CITY AND THE LATIUM IN THE RARE PARBONI–CUCCIONI COLLECTION ABSTRACT Fascinating nineteenth-century album dedicated to Rome and its surroundings, composed of 84 engraving views. The engravings depict monuments, ruins, squares and landscapes of ancient and modern Rome, extending to Tivoli and Lazio. The collection belongs to the fortunate tradition of small suites of views intended for travelers and collectors of the Grand Tour. The copy is distinguished by its elegant contemporaneous leather binding richly decorated in gold. Collections attributable to Parboni and Cuccioni are known in variants with different numbers of plates, a feature that makes it important to precisely describe the composition of each individual copy. WHY TO BUY ROME AND THE GRAND TOUR – A collection of views that visually documents Rome’s monumental and archaeological character beloved by European travelers of the nineteenth century. 84 ENGRAVINGS – A corpus particularly rich in images of Rome, Tivoli and Lazio, with famous monuments and perspectives that have been deeply transformed today. PARBONI AND CUCCIONI – Two names closely linked to the production and diffusion of Roman views of the nineteenth century; similar collections also include works by Ruga, Rinaldi, Acquaroni and Cottafavi. ELEGANT CONTEMPORARY BINDING – Hazel-brown leather with rich gilded decoration on the covers and spine, giving the album a strong collecting presence. MARKET VALUE The variability in the number of plates, the condition of the engravings and especially the quality of the binding significantly affect the valuation. For this copy, considering the 84 engravings and the beautiful contemporaneous gilt binding, a commercial offer in the €550–750 range seems consistent with the observable market. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION Contemporary full leather binding in hazel-brown; covers framed by a gold-tooled border with angular fleurons and a large central center ornament; smooth spine decorated in gold with a title on a small placard. Marbled endleaves. Some foxing and natural browning; normal signs of use to the binding. Frontispiece, half-title and 84 copper-engraved plates by Cuccioni and Parboni, with views, monuments and antiquities of Rome, Tivoli and ancient Lazio. In old books, with a multi-century history, a few imperfections may be present, not always noted in the description. This listing contains AI-Generated Visuals. FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR New Collection of Ancient and Modern Views of the City of Rome. Rome, at Tommaso Cuccioni, [nineteenth century]. Achille Parboni; Tommaso Cuccioni. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE The collection belongs to the great Roman iconographic tradition developed from the late eighteenth into the first half of the nineteenth century, when the city’s views formed one of the most sought-after cultural souvenirs of the Grand Tour. Ancient monuments, modern architecture, squares, fountains, ruins and suburban landscapes were gathered in portable albums intended for both the traveler and the collector. The bibliography and the copies preserved on the market show a complex publishing situation. Parboni collections with 100 views, datable around 1830, are documented, and Cuccioni publications include items with varying numbers of plates. An auction catalog records, for example, a Cuccioni collection with 103 plates, while other copies present 84 or 87 engravings. It is therefore more accurate to consider these suites as editorially variable collections rather than automatically applying a single collation to every copy. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHORS Achille Parboni was active in the Rome-based topographic engraving milieu in the first half of the nineteenth century, contributing to the production of views for the international public. Collections associated with the Parboni name include monuments, squares, ruins and landscapes of the surroundings of Rome; within the same family’s suites, artists such as Pietro Parboni, Pietro Ruga, Francesco Rinaldi, Giovanni Acquaroni and Gaetano Cottafavi also appear. Tommaso Cuccioni was an editor, engraver and dealer of prints in Rome and later became a significant figure in early Italian photography. His name is closely tied to the marketing of Roman views and monumental images, continuing with the new photographic medium a visual tradition already consolidated through engraving. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The publishing history of these collections is complex. A New Collection of the principal ancient and modern views of the noble city of Rome and its surroundings with 100 views and engravings dated between 1824 and 1829 is documented; editions or assemblies published by Tommaso Cuccioni with varying plate counts are also known. An antiquarian copy of the New Collection of Ancient and Modern Views of the City of Rome presents 87 plates, while the Bolaffi copy with the same collocation as the present one includes frontispiece, half-title and 84 engravings. This variability is particularly interesting from a collecting standpoint: it testifies to a production in which suites could be sold and rebound in different configurations, making the physical collation of each copy essential.
