PAINTING "PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, 1931" by Philippe DE ROUGEMON - Lot 276

PAINTING "PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, 1931" by Philippe DE ROUGEMONT (1891–1965) Oil on canvas, signed lower right Bears a restorer’s label on the back dated 2026. Dimensions: approx. 71 x 56 cm Good condition, restored He was born in Lille but grew up in Paris and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the city where his family originated. After training as an engineer, he moved to Paris to study art. There, he came into contact with artists such as Utrillo and Modigliani. He had many connections within the Swedish art scene, and it was there that he met his future wife, the artist Sigrid Wahlström. De Rougemont became known for his portraits, particularly through commissions from Swedish dignitaries such as King Gustav V and Prince Carl. His work often features female nudes, characterized by a rhythmic composition and an expressive touch. His paintings are included in public collections, including the Gothenburg Maritime Museum and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trained in the European figurative tradition and active primarily in Sweden, Philippe de Rougemont developed a personal artistic language at the intersection of several artistic sensibilities. His treatment of the nude evokes the elegant restraint of Félix Vallotton, while the sensuality of the model is reminiscent of certain female portraits by Kees van Dongen. The use of color and the pursuit of harmony can also be likened to the intimate works of Pierre Bonnard, Jean Gabriel Domergue, and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as to certain portraits by Anders Zorn, a major figure in Scandinavian painting and the Impressionist movement. Here is a bust portrait of a mature woman, dressed in an elegant dark ensemble accented by a collar and light-colored fur trim. The long string of pearls, adorned with a pendant, underscores the model’s sophisticated and refined character. The frontal pose, the direct gaze, and the understated background particularly highlight the subject’s personality.
