Painted Balinese Palintangan calendar. - Cotton - Indonesia - Late 20th century

Extraordinary and large traditional Balinese painting named Palintangan (or Palelintangan), depicting the Balinese astrological and divinatory calendar based on the Pawukon cycle. Made entirely by hand on cotton canvas according to the classic Wayang painting style of Kamasan (Klungkung, Bali), the work is divided into a grid of 49 squares (7x7). Each square is topped by detailed inscriptions in the ancient Balinese/Kawi script and illustrates deities (Dewo), celestial spirits, demons (Kasar) and mythological beings that determined auspicious days and character traits in the island's traditional culture.
