Otto Tragy - Playing cards - Jugendstil Whist Spielkarten No. 260 - Paper

The Whist deck consists of 52 cards. Made around 1924; see tax stamp (St.St.) No. 90 for the Altenburg stamping office. These special Art Nouveau playing cards (‘Art Nouveau’) were designed by Otto Tragy and first published by the Altenburg-based Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik Schneider & Co. around 1898. The cards were well received and were therefore produced as ‘Whist No. 260’ and ‘Patience No. 265’. Tragy mainly created portraits, genre and still-life paintings, but also ex libris, posters and sketches for decorative purposes. Otto Tragy (born March 7, 1866 in Prague; died January 7, 1928 in Pasing) was a German painter and graphic artist. He was the son of a lawyer and studied from October 18, 1886 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Karl Raupp and Nikolaus Gysis and in Paris with Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret. After completing his studies, from 1898 he worked as a painter and commercial graphic artist in the Pasing-Obermenzing artist colony. He became a member of the Munich Artists’ Cooperative. Otto Tragy designed in 1898 for the Altenburg-based Schneider & Co. a set of Art Nouveau playing cards for the Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik Schneider & Co. He exhibited his works up to 1922 at the Münchner Glaspalast.
