About Paul Lukas (1894–1971) was a Hungarian-American actor and one of the well-known character actors of classical Hollywood cinema. After his early career in theater and European film, he established himself in Hollywood in the late 1920s. For his lead role in Watch on the Rhine (1943) he received the Oscar for Best Actor. Lukas often embodied elegant, cultured, and multi-faceted personalities. Historical portrait photographs of the actor document the aesthetic of classic Hollywood studio photography. Biographie / Biography The American photographer Otto Dyar is among the leading portrait and Hollywood photographers of the early 20th century. From the 1920s onward, he worked for Paramount Studios and photographed film icons such as Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks, Cary Grant, Clara Bow, and Carole Lombard. His expressive black-and-white photographs are characterized by dramatic lighting, strong contrasts, and exceptional image composition. Dyar decisively shaped the glamorous Hollywood photography of the 1930s and 1940s. His works are today housed in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
