Southern Europe, Portugal, Azores. A scrimshaw jewelry suite of a pendant and a pair of drop earrings, carved in the Azores from whale tooth and bone. The pendant is an irregular oval plaque with a softly bevelled edge. On it a fully rigged three-masted ship flies pennants and runs before the wind over finely cross-hatched swells. Billowing clouds and a pair of distant gulls fill the sky, and a scalloped border frames the scene. The plaque is signed "OTHON" in small capitals above the waterline. Each earring is a smaller oval said to take the form of a miniature rigging pulley, or block, and each carries its own tiny ship under full sail. The engraved lines are filled with black pigment against the warm, creamy surface. All three pieces have modern gold-tone mounts, a chain, and ball-post studs so they can be worn. Othon Rosa da Silveira (1940-1987) was among the best-known Azorean scrimshaw artists of the later 20th century. He signed his work with his first name alone. His subjects followed the classic whaleman's repertoire: square-rigged ships, whaleboats, and the open Atlantic, cut with a fine needle-point line. Shore whaling lasted in the Azores far longer than almost anywhere else. Islanders hunted sperm whales from open boats with hand harpoons until 1987. That long-lived industry kept a steady supply of teeth and bone in local workshops, and Azorean scrimshaw survived as a living craft at a time when New England scrimshaw had largely become an antiquarian pursuit. This item is made of or contains whale ivory and qualifies for exemption under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an antique.
