Osamu Kojima (Japanese, b.1973) 'Nostalgia 10-TW-04'

2010, a large stoneware and fused glass sculpture, 94cm wide, 83cm deep, 73cm high, Memory and nostalgia are at the core of Japanese sculptor Osamu Kojima’s work. Through clay and glass, he blurs the boundaries between the natural and man-made, creating abstract forms that contemplate the ephemeral and transient characteristics of our world. He states, 'All things created by humanity will eventually collapse. The prosperity of humanity cannot last forever, there is always a crack or distortion somewhere.' However, bleak as this may seem, beauty always springs eternal from the ugly reality of this notion. Each piece by Kojima feels like a very personal musing on these heavy subjects and perhaps, in some small way, they allow us to cope with themes of the passing of time, life and death, the changes in nature and the uncertainty of the future. Kojima has worked with clay for almost 20 years - a practice that has informed his process, establishing a deep-rooted connection, respect and understanding of the materials he uses. The opposition of the materials he employs creates an interesting tension in his work, simultaneously appearing tactile, heavy and solid, yet also delicate, soft and light at the same time. Out of dissonance, a harmony is created. Perhaps this could even serve as a metaphor or paradox for the idea that humanity is mostly at odds with nature; we come from it, yet we struggle to care for it. 'Nostalgia 10-TW-04' amalgamates all of these ideas and techniques into a single, masterful piece. Condition Report, Condition Report, The sculpture weighs approximately 550kg.
