He is recognised as a senior law man and serves as Ngankari, a traditional healer, for the Irrunytju community. This standing informs the authority with which Dawson handles the country depicted here, the painting's structure of site and pathway anchored in the same ancestral geography that shaped his own upbringing. The painting's striking colour contrasts work interpretively rather than decoratively; the chains of white and red ringed roundels set against the surrounding fields of olive and yellow to mark out the significant sites threaded through this stretch of country act as an assertion of custodianship over this geography as its iconography. © NYAKUL DAWSON / Copyright Agency, 2026
