Historical background The lion dollar was minted from the second half of the 16th century and grew into one of the best-known trading coins of the Dutch Republic. Thanks to its recognizable image of the climbing lion and its wide international acceptance, the lion dollar was widely used in trade with, among others, the Baltic (Oostzeegebied), the Mediterranean, and the Ottoman Empire. Also in North America, Dutch lion dollars circulated, where they were known as Lion Dollars. The coin thus played an important role in international trade history. The year 1616 falls within the Twelve Years' Truce (1609–1621), a period of provisional peace between the Republic and Spain. During these years Dutch trade could develop further and the Republic solidified its position as an international trading power.
