Rare and fascinating original etching of exceptional documentary value, illustrating the siege and the subsequent relief (ontzet) of Fort San Filippo (Philippines), which occurred in May 1635 in the context of military campaigns led by Prince of Orange Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years' War. The defensive fortress, positioned in a swampy and coastal area highly strategic in Zealand, was the scene of a fierce clash between the troops of the United Provinces and the Spanish imperial forces. The composition is dominated at the center by the strict geometric and perspective plan of the star-bastioned fortress, surrounded by flooded moats. In the upper register the coastal waters are visible, crossed by large military vessels and Dutch transport ships with sails set. All around the fortifications, the plate meticulously describes the dynamics of the battles and movements of the armies: encampments of tents, batteries of cannons in action that spew clouds of smoke, approach trenches and long battalions of infantry and cavalry in motion. Upper left the scene is topped by an elegant Baroque cartouche surrounded by garlands of leaves and ribbons, containing the title in Dutch "DE PHILIPPINES BELEGERT EN ONTSET Anno 1635".
