Netherlands - Oldenzaal; Jan Orlers - Antiqua Saly - 1601-1620

Antiqua Saly (1610) Bird's-eye view map of the siege and capture of Oldenzaal by the Dutch States Army under the command of Prince Maurice in October 1597. The siege was part of Maurits' campaign of 1597, Maurits' successful offensive against the Spanish Netherlands. Earlier that year he had already besieged and taken the towns of Rijnberk, Meurs, Grol and Bredevoort. In particular the last two sieges were fierce and in Bredevoort even a plundering of the town occurred. The towns Enschede and Ootmarsum, where Maurits then advanced, surrendered without a fight. Oldenzaal had been back in the hands of Spanish rule since 1572. The Catholic Church was deeply rooted here. From 1572, every year a procession was held to celebrate that the Geuzen had been driven out of Oldenzaal. The defensive line of Oldenzaal consisted of a wall, six bastions, a moat and an earthen rampart. The town was defended by a half-dozen companies totaling about 400 men. They had only one cannon at their disposal. With that they could hardly achieve much against Maurits' numbers, who had encamped his troops to the north of Oldenzaal. They almost immediately began negotiations for an honorable surrender. It was agreed that the town would surrender on 24 October. After the cannons were fired by the States Army during the following night, the town felt further pushed back. As a result the surrender was signed already on 23 October and the day after the Spanish-aligned troops went to Lingen and Maurits with his troops entered the town. After Oldenzaal, Maurits continued in 1597 to Lingen and captured that city as well. Oldenzaal, however, did not remain in Dutch hands for very long. Ambrogio Spinola recaptured the town for Spain in 1605. The conquests of Oldenzaal and Lingen are among the last feats of Maurits during his successful period, later called the Ten Years.
