Masterpiece in Gem UNC: 1956 Rembrandt 1000 Gulden NETHERLANDS. Nederlandsche Bank. 1000 Gulden, 15.7.1956. P-89. PCGS Banknote Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. One of the most iconic designs in all of Dutch paper money, and an extremely rare uncirculated example. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second time that a third-party graded Gem Uncirculated example has been offered at public auction. This type was introduced in the 1950s, when the Netherlands was still rebuilding from the devastation of World War II. Representing massive purchasing power at the time of issue, this note was equal to about two or three months' average salary in the Netherlands in the late 1950s. Its use was reserved for larger transactions, such as trading livestock, which was traditionally conducted in cash. The design is beautiful, with a self-portrait of Rembrandt on the front, and details of Rembrandt paintings, a palette, and a paintbrush on the back. Although the authenticity of the Rembrandt painting that inspired the front is now disputed, it is instantly recognizable as the famous 17th-century Dutch painter. In all, an exceptional note and an important offering, not to be missed.
