Netherlands, Holland Duit 1702 (No reserve price)

Holland – Duit 1702 – Dordrecht | Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden Noordelijke Nederlanden – Republiek (1581–1795) – Provincie Holland Historical copper ducat from 1702, minted in Dordrecht for the province of Holland, at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Dordrecht belonged to the oldest and most important trading cities of Holland and had a rich coinage history. The provincial mint produced here various denominations, including the characteristic copper duits that played an indispensable role in daily payments. This issue dates from the period of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), in which the Republic played an important political and military role within Europe. Front: The crowned provincial arms of Holland with the characteristic leaping lion. Surrounding the provincial inscription, with visible contours of the coat of arms and the crown. Back: The value designation DUIT, divided over two lines, with the year 1702 below, enclosed by a pearl border. Historical background The ducat represented a value of 1/8 stuiver and was one of the most used copper coins within the Republic. While silver and gold trade coins made their way to international trading centers, it was precisely these small denominations that passed from hand to hand daily on markets, in shops and inns. A tangible reminder of the economic life in Holland, when cities like Dordrecht formed an important link within the extensive trading network of the Republic.
