Netherlands - Groningen Stad Groningen

Scarce Groningen plaque in nice condition with patina. The Groningen plaque (or Groningse plaque) was a historic silver or billon coin with a value of 1/6 of a Groningen stuiver. There was no single specific king or ruler governing this coin; the coins were minted by the city of Groningen itself as an autonomous authority (city government). The historical context of the rule around this coin period: • Autonomy of the City: Since the late Middle Ages, the city of Groningen behaved as a de facto independent city-state (free imperial city) with its own minting rights. The coins therefore bear the inscription MONETA NOVA GRONINGENSIS (New coin of Groningen) and the city coat of arms with the two-headed eagle. • Landsknechts? (Landsheren): Although the city carried out the minting rights itself, Groningen in the 16th century (when most plaques were struck, such as in 1566, 1577 and 1588) formally fell under the Spanish king Philip II. During the Eighty Years' War the city remained Spanish-leaning for a long time until the Reacquisition of Groningen in 1594, after which Groningen joined the Dutch Republic and the city government together with the Ommelanden shared sovereignty.
