Netherlands, Friesland Duit 1660 (No reserve price)

Friesland – Two rare Frisian duits 1645 and 1660 – Leeuwarden Northern Netherlands – Republic of the Seven United Netherlands – Province of Friesland A particularly attractive lot consisting of two rare Frisian duits from 1645 and 1660, struck at Leeuwarden in the seventeenth century. Two characteristic provincial coins from a period when Friesland within the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands possessed a distinctly autonomous administrative and monetary identity. Both specimens were issued during the stadthood of Willem Frederik van Nassau-Dietz (1640–1664). The provincial coin at Leeuwarden not only provided larger denominations, but also the small change that was necessary for everyday transactions. Obverse: FRI / SIA / 1645 and FRI / SIA / 1660 Translation: Frisia – Friesland. The provincial name is arranged in a compact form across the coin face, with the corresponding year below. This simple and instantly recognizable design is characteristic of the Frisian duits from this period. Reverse: NISI • DNS NOBISCVM Fully: Nisi Dominus nobiscum. Translation: If the Lord is not with us. The Latin inscription reflects the close interweaving of faith, governance and identity within the seventeenth-century Republic. Historical background The duit represented a value of 1/8 stuiver and belonged to the smallest coins circulating in daily commerce. Where the large silver and gold trade coins of the Republic found their way to international trading centers, it was precisely these small copper coins that passed from hand to hand in everyday payments at markets, in shops and inns. Today they stand as tangible witnesses to the economic life of the seventeenth century. Specifications * Region: Friesland * Mint: Leeuwarden * Dates: 1645 and 1660 * Denomination: 1 duit per specimen * Material: Copper * Stadtholder: Willem Frederik van Nassau-Dietz * Quantity: 2 specimens * Rarity: Rare A particularly attractive duo of two rare Frisian duits, with a fifteen-year difference between them. An interesting combination in which the autonomous provincial monetary system, religious imagery and the daily money traffic of the Republic come together. Both specimens are offered together as a single lot.
