etherlands – Royal Dutch Mint (KNM) – Set of 7 Gold-Plated Royal Commemorative Medals – House of Orange-Nassau – 36 mm Set of seven gold-plated commemorative medals relating to members of the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau. The medals were issued by the Royal Dutch Mint (Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt, KNM) and are preserved in individual capsules. Obverses: The set comprises seven different designs: 1. Emma of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1858–1934) – portrait of Queen Emma together with an architectural view. Legend: EMMA VAN WALDECK-PYRMONT 1858–1934. 2. King Willem III (1817–1890) – portrait of Willem III in military dress, accompanied by an architectural view. Legend identifies him as Koning der Nederlanden, with the dates 1817–1890. Willem III was King of the Netherlands from 1849 until his death in 1890. Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt 3. Willem V, Prince of Orange-Nassau (1748–1806) – portrait of Willem V with an architectural view. Legend: WILLEM V VAN ORANJE 1748–1806 and NASSAU. 4. Queen Beatrix (born 1938) – portrait of Beatrix with a royal palace in the background. Legend: BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN, with the year 1938. 5. Queen Wilhelmina (1880–1962) – portrait of Wilhelmina with a palace in the background. Legend: WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN 1880–1962. 6. Willem-Alexander (born 1967) – portrait of the then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander with an architectural view. Legend: WILLEM-ALEXANDER KROONPRINS DER NEDERLANDEN, with the year 1967. 7. Queen Juliana (1909–2004) – portrait of Juliana with a royal residence in the background. Legend: JULIANA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN 1909–2004. Reverse: Identical on all seven medals. Emblematic composition with a fruit-bearing tree, two birds above stylised waves and a circular nest-like element below. A crowned heraldic shield appears at the top. Legends: JE MAINTIENDRAI SÆVIS TRANQUILLUS IN UNDIS Je Maintiendrai is the historic motto of the House of Orange-Nassau and subsequently became the motto of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Sævis tranquillus in undis translates as “calm amid raging waves” and has historical associations with William of Orange.
