Necklace tribal Asmat, 20th century - Asmat - West Papua (No reserve price)

An attractive and authentic traditional necklace from the Asmat people of southwestern New Guinea, Papua, Indonesia, field collected by a Dutch doctor during his stay in the region. This remarkable ethnographic ornament is composed of carefully arranged natural materials, including elongated white beads, polished brown seeds and striking red beads, creating a beautifully balanced composition of contrasting colours and textures. Two large, irregularly shaped shell pendants form the central decorative elements, one displaying a pale cream-coloured surface and the other a darker brown exterior. The different colours and natural surfaces of these shells give the necklace a particularly distinctive appearance. The beads and pendants are threaded onto a cord, demonstrating the traditional craftsmanship of the Asmat people and their ability to transform materials obtained from their natural surroundings into attractive personal ornaments. In traditional Asmat society, necklaces and other forms of bodily adornment played an important role in personal appearance and social life. Ornaments made from shells, seeds and other natural materials could be worn during everyday activities as well as ceremonial occasions, depending on their particular form and significance. The Asmat are especially renowned for their elaborate woodcarving traditions, but their personal ornaments are equally fascinating expressions of their material culture. Shells and colourful seeds were appreciated for their decorative qualities, and their combination often resulted in striking pieces of jewellery with a distinctly local character. The two large shell pendants are particularly interesting features of this necklace. Their contrasting surfaces and irregular natural shapes create an unusual and visually appealing composition, while the carefully arranged red, white and brown beads contribute to its overall decorative effect. The necklace has survived in good condition, showing natural signs of age and use consistent with its traditional character. Its field collection by a Dutch doctor adds an interesting element to its provenance and ethnographic appeal. A fine and unusual example of traditional Asmat personal adornment, representing the rich artistic heritage of the people of southwestern New Guinea. An attractive collector's item for enthusiasts of Oceanic tribal art, traditional jewellery and authentic ethnographic objects from Papua.
