Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) - Ritratto Maschile - NO RESERVE

AUTORE Nazzareno Sidoli (1879–1969) was an Italian painter. Born in Rossoreggio di Bettola in the province of Piacenza, belonging to a family of painters together with his brothers Pacifico and Giuseppe, he built his artistic formation initially in Piacenza at the Art Institute "Gazzola," where he studied under Bernardino Pollinari and Stefano Bruzzi, then perfecting his training at the Milan and Parma Academies. His career was marked by an early and fortunate debut, culminating in his admission to the Milan Triennale of 1900 and to the important alliance with the patron Giuseppe Ricci Oddi, who purchased his first historical genre works, the "Musketeers," as early as 1908. Fundamental for his maturation were long stays in Paris, where he worked with success; here the artist, while remaining faithful to the solid construction of Lombard naturalism, opened himself to a highly personal reading of Post-Impressionism. In museums and salons, Sidoli elaborated a bold synthesis between the meticulous miniaturist technique of the Dutch Seventeenth Century or of Meissonier and the chromatic and luminous vivacity of French modernity. He definitively returned to Piacenza in 1920, starting a phase of research which, after a brief Symbolist interlude, focused on the truth of everyday data rendered through a painting style that remained forever vibrant. In his poetics, portraiture occupies a central role, distinguished by a Flemish-like care for detail and a deep psychological investigation. Sidoli immortalized historical and worldly figures, from the famous Buffalo Bill pastel (1905) to the portrait of Giosuè Carducci, up to the numerous commissions for Italian and European aristocracy. It is precisely through this genre, between the 1930s and 1940s, that his style bore witness to a significant rapprochement to the atmospheres of Magical Realism. In this period his painting, while still anchored in reality, became more rarefied and silent; the precision of the mark and the crystalline light conferred upon his subjects a solemn stillness and an almost timeless fixedness, never abandoning, however, that chromatic vivacity, a living inheritance of his Parisian years, which prevents the subject from hardening into mere metaphysics, keeping it pulsating with color. In addition to intense portraiture and religious activity—culminating in the frescoes for the Corpus Domini church in Piacenza—Sidoli exhibited his works in prestigious contexts, such as the Paris Salons and a solo show at the Comune of Bologna in 1933. His stylistic evolution, aimed at a synthesis between Victorian verismo and the inquietudes of the twentieth century, is today documented in important public collections. The most significant core of his works is housed at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna "Ricci Oddi" in Piacenza, but his paintings are also found in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Bologna and in international institutions such as the museums of Strasbourg and Biarritz. DESCRIZIONE "Ritratto Maschile" (Male Portrait), oil on panel, 51x39 cm, signed bottom left, datable to the 1920s. The painting offers the viewer the intense half-length portrayal of a mature man, characterized by a thick salt-and-pepper beard and strong features. The gaze, directed downward and partially concealed by the material fragmentation of the brushwork, appears deep and reflective, conveying a sense of lived introspection and rugged dignity. The figure, captured in a spontaneous and slightly asymmetric pose, seems to emerge almost organically from a movement-filled and elusive background, suggesting a strong emotional charge that immediately captures the observer’s attention and renders the subject’s palpable presence. Formally, the work stands out for an extremely material, nervous, and disintegrated painting technique, in which volumes are not delineated by precise contours but built through vigorous, layered touches of color. The chromatic play is bold and vital: the flesh tones and facial volumes take shape thanks to a vibrant juxtaposition of warm tones—terracotta, ochers, reds and browns—that dialog and clash with the cool, bright brushstrokes of the background. These flashes of green, turquoise, and blue do not merely frame the sitter, but penetrate the figure itself, insinuating themselves into the shadows of clothing and among the strands of the beard, generating a luminous dynamism of extraordinary expressive force. This canvas fits perfectly into the creative phase that followed the artist’s definitive return to Piacenza in 1920, a period in which his search, after a brief Symbolist interlude, firmly concentrated on the "truth of the everyday data rendered through a painting style that remains forever vibrant". The portrait, a genre that occupies an undisputed central role within his poetics, becomes here the preferred instrument to conduct a "deep psychological investigation." In the extreme chromatic and formal freedom of this face, the influence of his long stays in Paris emerges clearly. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. Work intact in every part with vivid and legible chroma and brushwork. The photo of the painting inserted in an environment was generated with artificial intelligence, and should be considered purely exemplary. Only the remaining photos, which faithfully show the object and its features, both general and detail, are valid. Tracked and insured shipping with proper packaging.
