Cymatoceras is a fossil genus of nectonic marine cephalopod mollusks whose documentation dates back to the Early Cambrian. Morphologically, the Cretaceous specimens shared many features with the modern Nautilus. The shell is globose, with a rounded whorl section, planispiral, varying from slightly evolved to involute with closed umbilici. The species of Cymatoceras were nektonic, active hunters, with feeding habits considered, in agreement with those of today, to be protein consumers. The thickness of the Cymatoceras shell seems to indicate greater resistance to the pressures of deep marine waters. It has been calculated that they could reach depths of 250 m, given that the simple septa of nautiloids are adapted to high hydrostatic pressures. Incredibly beautiful lot: an object of perfectly size for display inside a collection. Pedestal not included, made from reclaimed material and used solely for photographic purposes.
