Its sky blue color evokes God’s dwelling, the peace of the Holy Spirit, and the comforting waters of faith. In the Bible, this gem appears in Exodus as one of the twelve sacred stones of Aaron’s Breastplate, representing one tribe of Israel, and in Ezekiel as an ornament of the Garden of Eden. During the Middle Ages, its use spread in European liturgical art. Christian artisans set it reverently in processional crosses, chalices, and Evangelium covers. By pairing the celestial blue with earthly green, it also represents the armor of faith in spiritual warfare. Finally, due to its hue, it became closely linked to the mantle of the Virgin Mary as a symbol of purity and devotion.
