Montfort Plate

De Montfort Plate – Miniature Silent Butler / Crumb Catcher – Rootes Group – England – Mid 20th Century A charming and collectible English silver-plated miniature Silent Butler (Crumb Catcher), manufactured by De Montfort Plate, England. The underside is clearly marked "De Montfort Plate – Made in England – Silver on Copper", indicating a quality silver-plated copper construction typical of English tableware produced during the mid-20th century. Comparable De Montfort Plate pieces are generally dated between the 1920s and 1950s. The lid is beautifully engraved with elegant scrolling foliage surrounding the inscription "ROOTES GROUP". Rootes Group was one of Britain's leading automobile manufacturers, owning famous marques such as Hillman, Humber, Sunbeam, Singer, Commer and Karrier. This engraving strongly suggests that the piece was produced as a corporate presentation gift or executive table accessory, making it particularly appealing to both collectors of automobilia and English silver plate. Originally, a Silent Butler was used by the host or hostess to discreetly collect table crumbs, ash, cigarette ends or other small table waste during meals without disturbing the guests. Today these elegant objects are appreciated as decorative collectibles and conversation pieces, while still remaining perfectly usable as a stylish desktop or table accessory. The piece is made of silver plate on copper and retains a beautiful warm patina. As expected from a well-used vintage example, there is some wear to the silver plating, with copper showing through in several places, adding authentic vintage character. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description. Dimensions Length including handle: 14 cm Box: 9 × 7.5 cm Height (closed): 4.5 cm Box height: 3 cm Weight: approximately 164 g Condition Good vintage condition with normal age-related wear. Minor scratches and light wear throughout. Localised silver plate loss with copper visible in places. The hinge functions correctly and the piece closes well. Please refer to the photographs. A fine example of English tableware combining decorative elegance, practical use and automotive history, ideal for collectors of silver plate, automobilia or refined dining accessories.
