It was first presented to the scientific public in 1786 as “Chrysolithe” from Týn nad Vltavou in a lecture by Professor Josef Mayer of the Prague University, given at a meeting of the Bohemian Scientific Society (Mayer 1788). Zippe (1836) was the first to use the term “Moldavit,” deriving from the town Moldauthein (Czech: Týn nad Vltavou) – today in Bohemia (Czech Republic), where the first described pieces came from. Campo Del Cielo meteorites are classified as coarse iron octahedrites of Type IAB. This meteorite impact occurred about 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. The first discovery was documented in 1576 by a Spanish captain named Miravel, although the actual impact was likely observed by indigenous Indians who originally called the region the “Field of Heaven.” Herkimer diamonds are two-pronged quartz crystals found in exposed dolomite outcrops in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley in the USA. They are not real diamonds; the name “diamond” derives from their clarity and well-formed faces. Since the first finds were in the villages of Middleville and Little Falls, the crystal is also known as the Middleville Diamond or Little Falls Diamond.
